No-pet rule vs. pet lovers in Dubai

Pets can be an addiction to many people. Owning a pet can be a solution to many of life’s struggles, such as loneliness, lack of entertainment and affection. It also teaches you how to take responsibility.

But, there is one problem. Where do you keep your pets? Villas and private homes are okay.

However, many pet owners face challenges raising up a cat or a dog in flats as most apartment buildings in Dubai enforce strict rules against owning a pet.

Sumesh Shiwakoty, manger of an apartment building in Dubai Marina said, "We enforce a 'no pet' rule to maintain a healthy and safe environment for the residents."

"We have had several cases of pet owners who neglected to clean up after their dogs. This can cause health risks. It also makes people very uncomfortable."

He continued, " I know several residents here who own animals such as cats, dogs and birds. I do not say anything because I see how attached they are to their pets."

According to vets, pets don’t necessarily impose health risks.

"Owning pets such as cats, dogs, birds, or even hamsters is safe as long as the pet owners are following up with the pet's regular checkups and providing them with a comfortable environment that is suitable for the animal," said a vet at Nad Al Shiba Veterinary Hospital in Dubai.

"Also, it is the owner's responsibility to take their dogs on a daily walk and to clean up after them," he added.

Ahmad Saiid, father of four, was passionate that their dog is part of the family.

Saiid and his family continue to keep a dog regardless of his building’s 'no pet' rule.

"I am convinced that my wife and children treat our dog with more love and compassion than they treat me.

"They choose him over me every day."

Saiid said his family would be devastated if they had to let the dog go.

Many others like him struggle with the same problems daily.

They continue to sneak their beloved animals in and out of the building for the walks.

They take risks because letting go is never easy.
