iPad, iPhones and Blackberrys will no longer be allowed to be used by students in all Sharjah schools, according to Al Bayan newspaper.

The Sharjah Educational Zone (SEZ) has issued a circular to the managements of all schools under its purview, asking them to ban the usage of the mobile electronic devices such as iPhone, BlackBerry and iPad in the schools.

The directive follows numerous complaints involving students taking pictures with mobile phones and posting the same on social networking sites.

The educational zone said in the circular that school management is directly responsible for implementing the decision and to control the usage of mobile phones in schools, which is widespread among students.

The SEZ urged Sharjah schools to adopt strict measures against violating students by imposing appropriate penalties. The circular asked for school teachers to confiscate the electronic device from students and take appropriate administrative action against the violators.

Meanwhile, the educational zone called for a coordinated campaign along with parents to establish a culture of discipline and respect for rules and regulations, and to prevent pupils from acquiring mobile phones and carrying them to schools.

SEZ stressed on prohibiting the use of such devices because of their negative effect on the education process.

School administrations welcomed the decision to prohibit students from carrying mobile phones to schools, and said they see it as a step in the right direction, which will help correct one of the biggest mistakes in schools.

The schools said the phones distract students during classes while some pupils were also found using such devices in immoral manner.
