Abu Dhabi private schools cannot collect financial security deposits from students as guarantee for tuition fees, said Hamad Al Dhaheri, Executive Director for School Operations at the Abu Dhabi Education Council – the governing body of the schools in the emirate.

Al Dhaheri said in statements to Emarat Al Youm newspaper that according to the private schools policies issued last year the school may collect registration fee for the first time or re-registration one month before the start of the new academic year.

It will be deducted later from the fees approved by the Council and this amount should not exceed five per cent of the total fee, he said, adding that the school is not allowed to collect registration fees when you applying for admission.

However, he said private schools can retain registration or re-registration fees if the student joins the school in the first week of the semester.

He pointed out that the school has right to keep registrations fee if the student has not joined the school and the family of the student failed to notify the school in writing before the start of the academic year.

“In case the student couldn’t join the school because of the lack of scholarships, the school is obliged to return the full registration fee.”

Al Dhaheri stressed that schools can ask for tuition fee payment in three equal installments during the school year.

He added that the school may collect the first installment one month prior to the beginning of the academic year.

Al Dhaheri said that every school should publish a clear and transparent policy for non-payment or late payment of tuition fees.

The school’s board of trustees is obliged to clarify policies regarding tuition, fees, school uniforms, textbooks, transportation fees and other academic activities in a clear and transparent manner.

He advised private schools to keep students' families aware of these policies through websites and other means.
