UAE authorities assured the public there will be no rise in the prices of sheep for Eid Al Adha (sacrifice feast) as more than 200,000 of them will be supplied to the local market.

Authorities, reacting to complaints about sharp price rises ahead of Eid Al Adha every year, said they have allowed outlets in the country to import sheep from 44 countries to tackle any shortage and prevent dealers from raising prices.

“We will ensure that nearly 220,000 sheep will be supplied to the market from now until after Eid Al Adha…there will be no rise in the livestock prices this season,” said Hashim Al Nuaimi, consumer protection director at the ministry of economy.

He told reporters on Wednesday that around 100,000 sheep are already available in the market and that at least 120,000 heads would be imported.

Eid Al Adha, which involves slaughtering sheep in line with Islam, is expected to start in the first week of October.
