No tracking chip in Emirates ID card: Eida

Nixes rumours about jaywalkers tracked and fined via device in ID card

Caught jaywalking in the UAE - don’t blame it on your Emirates ID.

Social networking sites have been abuzz lately with reports that UAE residents can be tracked through their Emirates ID card.

Rumours of jaywalkers, in particular, being tracked and fined, were flying thick and fast.

A tweet from Medy reads: “Is it true that jaywalking is detected through emirates identification card? How could I know if I have any violations?”

Another tweet says: “Stop carrying your Emirates ID with you, you are being tracked since a tracking chip has been installed in the card.”

According to the  Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) this is not true.

“These are just rumors,” an Eida spokesman told Emirates 24|7.

Emirates ID is mandatory for all residents in the country.

By the end of 2011, around 5.277 million residents have been registered with the ID system, nearly 63 per cent of the UAE’s total population of about 8.2 million.

Around 2.44 million people were registered through 2011.

if this is true how will I check the the fine for E-ID card, there's any option or website to check if we have any violation on the road?

I don't think it is feasible to install detectors, 24/7 operational, on every road, just to track down violators, nor is it practical to have an agency to track down every person via satellite just like how Jack Bauer fight criminals. If this is the case then why don't the UAE use the SALIK to catch overspeeders and road violators instead of using cameras? Moreover, why don't we use the Emirates ID tracking capability to also monitor drivers?

if this is not true,, how can you explain all stories of people we know whom have encountered these problems at the airport upon their departure. Some of them were not able to take the flight as they were not able to pay the fines imposed on them.

I'm hoping that the EIDA is going to explain everything for everyone. I know there is a lot of people who is very afraid because of this rumour about the fines.

Thanx for the info about the rumours of the Emirates ID fines for jaywalking because I'm going back to Phillipines next week.
  • Nico Amador 19 March 2012 19:41 7 22
I'm going back to Phillippines this coming march 27 but I didn't receive any text message that I have fine or I didn't obey the law. Is that mean I will not pay for anything in the airport?

EIDA should inform by sending text message to violators so they were not shocked upon leaving the country for their fines. So they can pay for it immediately if ever they committed jaywalking...

ID card is similar to The Salik and can be machine read, so yes it is possible to track you down using your ID card. But than why worry unless you are a criminal ????

Yup, its not true that you can be tracked but however, fines can be imposed into emirates id cards by slapping it through gadgets alike to the credit card slapping gadget. but this need to stop you in person and inform you of what Violation you did. fines then can be collected in the airport while leaving the country.
