The UAE Ministry of Labour is set to implement the mandatory midday work break decision regarding the labourers who work in the searing heat during the summer months from June 15 to September 15.

Maher Hamad Al Obed, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at the ministry, announced implementation of the decision to cease work at afternoon from 12:30pm to 3pm at open workplaces.

Al Obed commented the positive results of enforcement of the midday break decision in previous years, extending his thanks and appreciation to the ministry's partners, for their role in making the campaign a success during the previous seven years.

In accordance to the midday break decision issued by the Minister of Labour Saqr Ghobash, the companies will  give two-and--half hour break from 12.30pm to 3pm to workers who work at the open places such as the construction sites.

The ministry's decision also stated that the daily working hours should not exceed eight hours in the morning or night shifts, and that overtime should be paid to those working additional hours.

Works which must continue non-stop for technical reasons are exempted from the afternoon work ban, but employers are required to provide first aid, re-hydration/electrolyte solutions, cold water etc. A list of such works will be issued on Friday by the ministry.

The ministry warned that  companies which violate the midday summer break would face penalties, noting that offending firms would be   downgraded by the ministry, and fined Dh15,000 for each violation.
