A labour accommodation in Ras Al Khor Industrial area caught fire Friday leaving person dead and several others injured.

Preliminary investigations show that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a room on the second floor of the two-storey building.

Dubai Police operation room and Civil Defence was alerted at 1:50am on Friday but by the time police and fire fighters reached the spot one person, an Asian worker, was already dead.

However, civil defence workers rescued 10 others living in the room where fire broke out, with a few already injured. They also evacuated the building immediately.

Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of General Department of Criminal Investigation, said that six people living in that room were injured, two serious while the rest had moderate to minor injuries. Two firefighters were also rushed to the hospital for suffocation while rescuing the workers.

Teams from three different fire stations – Ras Al Khor, Rashidiya and Karama – joined together to put out the fire and managed to prevent it from spreading to other buildings.

The body of the deceased was transferred to the General Department of Forensic Medicine, while Dubai Police and Public Prosecution are carrying out separate investigations on the incident.
