Applicants seeking to register in the UAE national identity could fill the needed form at home and avoid standing in long queues at packed registration centres when authorities introduce the online service next week.

The experimental launch of the e-registration form for the ID card will begin from January 1, the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) has confirmed.

According to a report in Arabic daily Al Khaleej, the body pointed out that “the first phase of the e-form will be for Emaritis,” and that it will begin on January 1, while the same service for the UAE’s expat residents will start in February 2012.

The Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA), which oversees the landmark ID project, had in June this year explained that, once launched, the online service would allow applicants to fill the ID form, pay fees and get an appointment for finger printing without having to go through registration centres.

“Once this service is enforced, applicants will only have to fill the form online through EIDA’s website, upload all needed documents and pay fees online…they then can get an appointment for finger printing online,” EIDA director general Dr. Ali Mohamed Al Khouri told Emarat Al Youm daily in June this year.

Meanwhile, EIDA has disclosed that the total number of transactions involving registration and renewal of cards processed by the authorized typing centres exceeded 260,000 last week, with 37,000 transactions conducted daily. The announcement came during a regular meeting of the directors of the registration centres of EIDA.
