Over 205,000 Dubai traffic offences in 1 month

More than 143,000 offences involved speeding and 59 drunk driving

Drivers committed a whopping 205,000 traffic offences in Dubai in January, an average 6,833 a day, and most of them involved speeding.

Official data showed the 205,252 offences were those recorded by the emirate’s traffic police as many other violations could have been committed but were not detected.

The recorded offences last month were lower than the 212,307 committed in January 2011 but remain among the highest rates in the world compared with the emirate’s relatively small population of around two million.

The violations last month included 143,234 speed offences, 4,502 for not fastening the seat belt while driving, 3,514 for using the mobile phone wile driving, 2,599 for failing to renew the vehicle registration, 366 for driving with an expired licence and 59 for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the figures provided by Dubai traffic police chief Major General Mohammed Al Zafin, who was quoted by Albayan newspaper.
