An increasing number of motorists have been jumping the red signals in Sharjah. According to the latest statistics, 5,291 violations relating to jumping red lights were reported during the first half of 2012, compared to 4,577 during the same period of 2011.

This is an increase of about 15 per cent, said a report by the traffic and patrols directorate Sharjah Police.

However, in 2013, there have been 6,553 cases of motorists jumping the red signal, which is an increase of 5 per cent compared to last year.

Sharjah Police installed about 24 new radars, besides surveillance cameras at crucial intersections signals, the traffic directorate said and added that this measure aided in spotting violators.

These devices alert the operations room directly.

Police said accidents that result from jumping red signals are often dangerous because they would be speeding causing violent crashes.

In an effort to create public awareness, police telecast the video clips from radar cameras on a TV programme called ‘The
Policeman’ on Saturdays at 7pm on Sharjah Channel, in collaboration with Sharjah Media Corporation.
