The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi announced on Monday the implementation of Mawaqif paid parking services in four new areas in Abu Dhabi starting from October 17.

This is a step towards Mawaqif 2010 Plan revealed earlier this year, aiming to manage car parking facilities and spaces in Abu Dhabi.

The new sectors are W5, W6, W7-01 and W8.

The first sector is between Corniche Road and Al Nasr Street, King Khalid bin Al Waleed Street and Tarek bin Zeyad Street with a total of 817 parking bays.

The second sector is between Al Nasr Street and Zayed First Street, King Khalid bin Al Walid Street and Tarek bin Zeyad Street with a total of 1,454 parking bays.

The third one is between King Khalid bin Abdel Aziz Street and Tarek bin Zeyad Street, Al Nasr Street and Zayed First Street with a total of 628 parking bays.

The fourth one is between King Khalid bin Abdel Aziz Street and Al Khaleej Al Arabi, Al Corniche Street and Zayed First Street with a total of 1,528 parking bays.

The paid parking is enforced from 8am to 9pm, Saturdays to Thursdays, at a rate of Dh3 per hour for Premium Parking (identified by turquoise and white curb stones) with a maximum stay of four hours, and Dh2 per hour or Dh15 per day for Standard Parking (identified by turquoise and black curb stones).

Najib Al Zarooni, General Manager of Parking at the Department of Transport said: "Since our launch, the DoT has been making continuous efforts to gradually increase Mawaqif parking all over the emirate in a bid to ease the parking problems in some of Abu Dhabi's most congested areas that suffer from lack of parking spaces and illegal parking behaviours.

“We can now observe the positive impact and improvements in the areas where paid parking system is implemented; resulting in less congestion and free flow of traffic through the emirate,” he said.

"To keep pace with Abu Dhabi’s rapid growth, Mawaqif was created to serve the community and the achievement of its desired goals and objectives rest heavily on numerous aspects including the support of the community as we work together to make Abu Dhabi a better city.”

Residents in the area can apply for resident permits from the Mawaqif Customer Service Centres.

Residential permits allow road users to park in any available Standard Parking bay in the area where they reside. By clearly displaying the permit on the vehicle dashboard, they will be exempt from paying hourly or daily tariffs at the parking meters. This permit is available to owners or tenants and their first of kin residing with them, such as mothers, fathers, spouses and children with a maximum of two permits per household. Each permit is sector and vehicle specific.

The documents required to obtain the resident permit include: passport copy with valid residency visa; lease of contract or residency ownership proof; last electric bill; vehicle ownership; relationship proof for the vehicle owner if different from the tenancy contract.

Annual fees for the resident permits are Dh800 for the first vehicle and Dh1,200 for the second vehicle. Verification and processing of resident permits takes a minimum of three working days.

Customer service representatives are available to assist the public at the DoT Customer Service Centre on Hamdan Street from 7am to 9pm Saturdays to Thursdays, and from 5pm to 9pm on Fridays.

The second Department of Transport Customer Service Centre is at Marina Mall, and it is open from 7.30am to 6pm Sunday to Thursday.
