Dubai parents seek Ramadan school time change

Parents of different private schools in Dubai have urged Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai (KHDA) to reconsider Ramadan timings of schools during the holy month.

Following the latest directive from KHDA this week, all schools were told that they have to begin at 8.30 am and finish at 13.30 pm from Sunday to Thursday, for all students, including Foundation Stage.

Many parents are concerned with this change in timings as they believe it will cause heavy traffic jam near the schools.

Speaking to ‘Emirates24|7’, a South African mother-of-two, whose kids are at Kings School in Nad Al Sheba 4, said that currently, her kids start at 8.15 am and finish at 3pm, which is perfect.

"There are three schools on the same road, and this late start and late finish time of our school is very good for us as we don't get stuck in traffic on the school road.  But now with the change in timing, we will be late for sure," she said.

Maryam, an Emirati mother-of-two said that the change in time is good for the kids, but not for the parents.

"The late start is good, but we will not benefit from it as we will waste time saved in traffic on road next to school. This will also cause another problem of lack of parking space. At the end of the day, we will suffer for minimum three weeks in Ramadan until schools close," she said.

A Jordanian mom-of-four shared similar concerns. "Instead of making the timings of all schools the same, it would be better if they kept the start time, and reduce finish time accordingly. So schools will start as usual, but end at different times and parents and kids will benefit from the time change," she said.
