A Dubai Taxi driver is accused of ‘robbing’ a passenger when the latter refused to pay his taxi bill.

“The passenger did not pay the fees so I robbed him,” MSA, 38, the Bengali driver, admitted before the Presiding Judge Hamad Abdullatif Abdul Jawad.

However, the passenger, Mohammedullah Haji Amanullah, claims he offered to pay the bill, but in US dollars.

An argument ensued, during which MSA snatched Amanullah’s wallet containing $850 and Dh1,000.

MSA had been granted bail in the case and is still driving his taxi.

According to the Prosecution, on April 23, Amanullah lodged a complaint that he was robbed by a Dubai Taxi driver who picked him from the Naif area.

When Amanullah wanted to pay the fare in US dollars, MSA told him that he belongs to a government body that does not accept any currency except the UAE dirham.

The driver then snatched the wallet from the passenger and ran away.

Hassan Khalaf, 25, a policeman, testified that RTA officials led the police to the accused.

The driver admitted taking the money and when asked why, he said because the passenger did not pay the trip’s fare.

A verdict will be delivered on August 30.
