Abu Dhabi’s traffic police have issued a fresh warnings to pedestrians using the wrong crossing on the emirate’s roads, saying those who commit such offences will be responsible for accidents involving casualties.

In texts to mobile phones and on social networks, the police administration said people crossing busy roads must use marked crossings, tunnels or pedestrians lanes in line with traffic laws that involve fines against offenders.

“Those who cross the road in the wrong way are vulnerable to serious accidents that could lead to injuries or deaths…the pedestrians making wrong crossing will be responsible for what happens to them,” it said.

“If a person violated these rules and suffered injuries in an accident, neither the car driver not the insurance company will not be responsible for this injury.”

Police data showed penalties against such offences and intensified police campaigns at road crossings have resulted in a reduction in accidents involving pedestrians in the emirate, with the death toll falling by 14 per cent to 70 in 2012 from 81 in 2011.
