Permanent job ban for absconding workers

Workers who abscond from their employers will be permanently banned from working in the UAE while a one-year ban on other employees will start from the date of their departure from the country, according to the Labour Ministry.

The ministry outlined this position during an open-day meeting held regularly to consider applications by workers seeking exemption from a work ban in line with new rules introduced by the country early this year.

Officials attending the meeting rejected an application from a worker who had got a one-year job ban but have not left the UAE. The worker, who was still in the UAE months after he received the ban, requested an exemption from the remaining ban period so he can join a new job.

“The application has been rejected and the worker has been told that the one-year ban he had got will start from the date from his departure from the country,” said Humaid Al Suwaidi, Labour Ministry Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs.

“We also made clear to all applicants that those who abscond from their sponsors will get a permanent ban from work in the UAE.”
