An Emirati prisoner in Sharjah is waiting for financial help to pay bloody money and regain his freedom after killing an Asian man while driving on his way for a job interview, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Ali Hassan Mayouf, 26, has completed his four-month jail term but remains in prison for failing to pay diya to the victim’s relatives under Islamic law due to his poor financial resources, the Arabic language daily Emirat Alyoum said.

Ali has been ordered by court to pay Dh200,000 in blood money and a Dh5,000 fine for knocking over the Asian just after he set off from his home town of Khorfakkan to Abu Dhabi for a job interview after years of unemployment.

“I drove my car at around 4.00 am when the Asian man emerged in front of the car to pick his ball as he was playing with a friend…I could not avoid him and he was killed,” Ali was quoted as saying.

“I was very upset for the death of this man and was further upset when I was jailed at a time when I was struggling to get a job to support my family.”

Ali said his father Hassan is the only supporter of the family of 11, adding that he could not pay diya as all his brothers are unemployed.

Emirat Alyoum said the government-owned Alfaraj Fund is considering paying diya for Ali following a drive by the paper and the ministry of interior.
