Abu Dhabi authorities have reassured the public over food imports from radiation-hit Japan, saying such imports need at least a month to arrive and must be tested before entry.
The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority said no consumer items contaminated by nuclear radiation from Japan had arrived in the emirate’s ports on the grounds the tremor hit Japan on March 11 and imports from the Asian industrial giant need 30-35 days to arrive in the UAE.
“Besides, those imports from Japan include mainly canned foodstuff and frozen fish and they have not exceeded 57,430 tonnes over the past four months,” the Authority said in a statement published in local newspapers on Monday.
“As for fish and other fresh imports, they are all subject to examination to ensure they are fit for consumption…customs authorities in the country normally test all imports involving fish, meat, and chicken before allowing them in.”
