Rains continue to lash parts of UAE; mercury dips to 3ᵒC in parts

Heavy rains lashed parts of Sharjah and Ajman yesterday, resulting in waterlogging and traffic chaos in parts of the country.

Sharjah (around the airport) and Fujairah recorded the highest rainfall at 21mm, with temperatures at Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah dropping as low as 3.5 degrees Celsius.

The rain continued in the early hours of Tuesday, with the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology confirming heavy showers in parts of Fujairah this morning.

The wet weather is expected to continue in the north and east parts of the country until this evening, with the National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) confirming the possibility of dust clouds over open areas.

The alert to rough sea conditions have been maintained these past 24 hours, with high waves reported and warnings to beach goers and fisherman venturing into the Arabian Gulf and the Oman Sea.

With the humidity levels expected to rise later tonight, the NCMS has ruled the possibility of a moderate cloud of fog to descend upon parts of the country next morning.

While those who are brave enough to endure the chilly climes, Jebel Jais is expected to hover around 3 degrees Celsius, while Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain recorded a temperature 6 degrees higher; meanwhile, Jebel Yibir recorded 4.6 degrees Celsius.

The temperature inland will remain relatively cooler, with internal areas dropping as low as nine degrees, while the coastal areas could rise as high as 23 degrees Celsius.

In a statement, the Sewage and Irrigation Network Department of Dubai Municipality in cooperation with different departments and authorities has issued a statement that it has completed the cleaning process of the city of Dubai after the heavy rain and bad weather all over the emirate.

Eng. Hassan Makki, Director of Sewage and Irrigation Network Department and head of the Rain Committee said the rain did not cause any major damage as our teams, the technical and administrative people could successfully manage the situation.

“The Contact Centre of civic body has received only few notification calls on small incidents during and after the rain. Most of the calls were related to the traffic blocks due heavy water logs,” Khalid Badri, Director of Contact Centre said.

Khalid urged the public to inform the civic body calling its hotline 800900 in case of any problem remains in any area of the emirate.

The civic body also coordinated with other concerned departments and sections to fix the tasks in the implementation of the plan both in terms of technical and professional support and of providing equipment and machinery required.

Meanwhile, Sharjah Municipality has said the authority moved swiftly to clear the water logged streets of the emirate yesterday to ensure a smoother driver for commuters this Tuesday.
