RAK Airways has confirmed refunding all passengers booked through its Calicut operations, with all other ticket holders being contacted for the same after the carrier suspended all commercial operations from January 1.

A representative of the Ras Al Khaimah-based carrier said that in the two weeks since the suspension of flights, the airline has also ensured that alternate arrangements have been made for all remaining passengers who were already in transit when the airline brought operations to a halt.

They further said: “RAK Airways has already started the process of issuing refunds to all ticket holders and is committed to ensuring this happens as smoothly as possible.”

The airline stated: “We have already refunded all of our passengers with tickets issued by our GSA office (Great India Business Pvt Ltd), in India in full amounting to Rs12,499,500 (Dh746,819).

“For those passengers who have travelled from Calicut, we have arranged and bought for them tickets for their return journey on other airlines.”

The Calicut operations were handled first as the maximum number of passengers originated from the Indian city.

An email ID has also been setup for remaining passengers looking for refunds at customersupport@rakairways.com.

The airline rep continued: “We are requesting all remaining passengers to email with their scanned tickets and PNR numbers so the refunds can be facilitated.

“The full amount will be refunded to the credit card used and will take 15-20 working days to process. Meanwhile, those who may have booked through agencies can send us their details on email and we can contact them directly.”

In a written statement earlier, the airline explained its decision to suspend operations, saying: “The decision for suspending operations was taken following increased pressures on the carrier’s performance due to continuous market conditions, increased operating costs and the impact of the regional political instability on the overall aviation industry.”

However a restructuring is also in the works.

The airline further stated: “We will take this time to re-evaluate the best options available for RAK Airways future as well as those that  fit the industry requirements of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.”

RAK Airways network included flights from RAK International Airport to Doha, Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, Jeddah, Riyadh, Calicut and Kathmandu.
