Reckless drivers to face Dh1 million fine in Dubai

Published

Dubai Police Chief has issued what could be the sternest warning to stunt drivers who intentionally damage public property, saying they face a fine of up to Dh1 million.

Major-General Khamis Matar Al Mazina said Dubai Police would no longer tolerate stunt driving on the emirate’s roads and that strict instructions have been issued to police patrols to arrest anyone involved in such ‘irresponsible’ acts.

“These acts by some irresponsible young men give a very bad image to the emirate…they cause damage to public property and endanger human lives…penalties against these drivers could involve Dh1 million,” he told ‘Al Bayan’ daily.

He said a driver caught recently in stunt act by the police faces harsh punishment as the damage he had caused to public property was estimated at more than Dh500,000.

He said 82 other vehicles without plates had been seized by the police in the past few weeks and that some of them were doing more than 200 kph.

“We are coordinating with the Roads and Transport Authority to assess damage to public property caused by these drivers and take action accordingly,” he said.

“We have found that normal traffic fines against these reckless drivers are no longer deterrent in the absence of control by their families,” he added.

In other comments, Dubai’s traffic police director Colonel Saif Al Mazroui said police patrols have been intensified on roads to seize rash drivers, adding that police have the powers to arrest those drivers on the spot.

He urged the public to call police on 901 or free toll numbers 8004353 – 8007777 or email them on mail@dubaipolice.gov.ae to report any reckless acts on roads.
