Residents queue for ‘Your Weight in Gold’ scheme

Dubai Municipality claims to be overwhelmed by the response it has received since the launch of the ‘Your Weight in Gold’ initiative, a brainchild of Director General Hussain Nasser Lootah.

The scheme, launched on July 19, promises to reward residents with a gram of gold for every kilo they lose, with the top three biggest losers set to win gold equivalent to Dh20,000 each.

“We’ve got over 6,000 people registering for the initiative. And the numbers are increasing every day,” Mohammed Al Noori, Director of Corporate Marketing and Relations Department at Dubai Municipality, told Emirates 24|7.

That’s 6,000 registrants in just six days, or 1,000 per day, and the number is sure to escalate as more people learn about the initiative and jump on the win-win bandwagon.

To be entitled for the golden prize, the participant must lose over 2kg.

“Ours is a land of gold, so what better way to use it in our initiative,” beamed Al Noori.

He emphasised how this is a great way to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. “The aim is awaken people because a lot of people take things for granted, and the last thing they think about is themselves. Especially during Ramadan, the food is aplenty and tempting.”

He insisted that “it isn’t only about the gold,” and the campaign will help spread awareness about the need to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“The idea is that Dubai Municipality cares about its citizens and their health. We need people to come to work healthy.”

Detailing how the process works, Al Noori said residents must register themselves before the cut-off date of July 31 at one of the five centres – Al Safa Park, Zabeel Park, Al Barsha Park, Al Khawaneej Park and Al Mamzar Park – between 8pm and midnight every day.

“It’s an easy process. The registration takes only a few minutes, and the participant is weighed.

“Once that is done, the participant gets an SMS to confirm their place. Then, another text message will determine where they have to head for the final weight check on August 19.”

The exercise is a simple way of telling people that it’s important to stay fit and healthy, he highlighted.

There are no hidden rules and regulations or charges, it’s free for everyone. “That’s the reason why we have decided to use parks for registrations, and not malls.”

The registrations points will also house fitness experts, who will also guide you on how to go about the weight-loss plan.

The initiative is launched in collaboration with the DMCC and the DGJG.
