As the street fights in Ras Al Khaimah continue to rise, RAK residents are calling on authorities to impose harsher penalties to curb the violence.

There have been near daily incidents reported over the last few months, with majority of hospitals casualty patients being the victims of brawls.

Quoting Dr Joseph Al Tair, head of the Emergency Department at Saqr Government Hospital in RAK. The 'Gulf Today' reported on Sunday that over 95 per cent of the injured received by the hospital’s casualty department are the victims of street fights.

However, he noted that, very few of the injuries are of serious type as most of the victims come with minor wounds and scratches from petty quarrels.

The residents are seeking more interference from the law enforcement authorities and urging them to take long term measures to curb the dangerous phenomena, which they feel can spiral into something ugly if not checked at the right time.

Major Marwan Jekkah, Head of Relations and Moral Guidance at RAK Police, stated that police patrols along with the criminal investigation team reach the sites of fight immediately after a complaint.

“They deal firmly with such incidents by taking legal deterrent measures against those who are involved in these fights according to the penal code of the country.”

“Concerned security authorities constantly monitor the public places and shopping malls to ensure the highest standards of security and safety for all members of society,” he added.
