Road crash crippled girl rejected by hospitals in Abu Dhabi

Egyptian girl needs about Dh600,000 for treatment in Germany

Hospitals in Abu Dhabi have refused to admit an Egyptian girl crippled after a road accident as she cannot afford it and her case is so serious that she needs to be treated abroad, a newspaper said on Thursday.

Shada, 23, was paralyzed after a road crash in Abu Dhabi in April and was partially treated in Al Mafraq Hospital before she moved to a hotel room due to insufficient medical insurance for her case, Emirat Alyoum said.

Her 24-year-old sister, Shurooq, who came from Egypt to be with Shada, said doctors told them she needed to have treatment in Germany and that costs for such a trip could be around Dh600,000.

“She is now staying at a hotel room because her insurance does not cover additional treatment at Al Mafraq Hospital…her employers have also sacked her and she has to return home,” Shurooq said.

“We have no choice but to put her in the hotel as other hospitals refused to receive her because of the seriousness of her case and the high treatment costs, which we can not afford…we appeal for all benevolent people to help her.”

Shada, an orphan, came to the UAE last year just and worked as a saleswoman at a private firm. She is a holder of a bachelor degree in arts and literature.

Police and hospital reports showed she suffered from spinal cord rupture and fractures in the backbone, skull and other parts of the body.

Such sad news.. I agree with Naushad. The other party involved in the car crash should bear all costs. That is what car insurance is there to cover costs. Best of luck - Shada.

Health insurance should be totally reviewed. There are many cases when hospitals milk the patients out of their insurance coverage, and dischage or transfer them to some government hospitals that are not charging 7-star hotel rates.

Give us a possible link to any potential 'family' she can't be one person on her own. Also doesn't make sense that all hospitals would deny her. Surely there are some humans there with real hearts? I don't know, I just don't know. This is wrong on so many levels.

The cost should be born by the person caused this accident.

How can a hospital with the good reputation turn away a person that is in dire need of medical attention. I dont understand this logic.
  • Naushad 26 July 2012 12:15 12 0
This cost be borne by the person that caused the accident or the insurance company that covered the person.
