Asian drivers cause maximum accidents

Indians and Pakistanis emerged as the main cause of traffic accidents in Dubai this year as they were blamed for more than half the road deaths in the first eight months of 2012, according to police statistics.

Road mishaps killed 76 people in the first eight months, down from 88 in the first eight months of 2011, the figures showed.

Indian drivers emerged as the main cause of accidents as they were responsible for 216 car crashes that resulted in 23 deaths.

Pakistanis were involved in 235 accidents resulting in 20 deaths, followed by Emiratis who were responsible for 196 mishaps that caused 15 deaths.

Negligence and miscalculation on the part of drivers topped the list of offences as they were to blame for 20 deaths, according to Dubai traffic police chief Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin.

Sudden turning came second, causing 15 deaths while seven deaths were caused by wrong entry into roads.

“There was a decline in the number of casualties this year because of intensified police patrols and awareness campaigns…another main factor is the announcement of plans to introduce white points, which were first revealed in April and were largely welcomed by the public,” he told Emarat Alyoum daily.
