Salary hike pumps up fuel station staff

Hundreds of employees working in the convenience stores and forecourts of Adnoc Distribution are jubilant after receiving an across-the-board salary hike, ranging from Dh600 to Dh1,000.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, several fuel station workers of Adnoc and Emarat (which was recently acquired by the Abu Dhabi-based fuel distribution firm) said they are elated after receiving a couple of salary hikes in recent months.

“Now I am taking home more than Dh3,000 per month compared to Dh1,200 or Dh1,400 earned by my friends in other fuel marketing companies. Many of them want to join our company now because of the salary difference. We are expecting another increment soon,” said an Indian employee who has been working in the company for many years.

“At Adnoc Distribution, we recognise the importance of helping employees to maintain a good quality of life. It boosts their morale, increases overall productivity and makes for happier employees,” said an official source from Adnoc Distribution.

In September 2008, Adnoc announced a 20 per cent salary hike to match the inflation level at that time.

“It has been a good month for all of us because we were expecting a salary hike for some time now. Many of our friends from Emarat who joined Adnoc after the recent takeover are also happy because they are also getting a pay hike,” said another employee.

“I am happy that Adnoc has taken over our company. Dh3,000 salary is without accommodation and transport but it is still better than Dh1,200 with free accommodation and transport as in other fuel marketing companies,” said a forecourt staff at the Ajman outlet of Adnoc. He said supervisors and other staff also received a salary hike.

“A supervisor or site manager gets more than Dh5,000 in Adnoc,” he added.

Meanwhile, a new development is the appearance of women cashiers and supervisors at Adnoc fuel stations, especially in the Northern Emirates. “Earlier, women were not recruited in convenience stores. Now many women work as cashiers and supervisors,” said a recently appointed cashier/sales assistant at Adnoc.
