Salik break-time on Dubai road: Unaware motorists click here

A majority of the driving population in Dubai are still unaware of the toll-free run on Al Maktoum bridge every night.

According to the Road Transport Authority (RTA)’s official website, no Salik will be charged every day between 10pm and 6am.

It reads, “Passing through Al Maktoum Toll Gate is free when the Floating Bridge is closed (between the hours of 10pm – 6am Saturday to Thursday and 10pm – 9am on Friday.”

Salik is an electronic toll system that was introduced in Dubai in 2007. Every time a motorist passes through a Salik gate, they (electronically) pay Dh4.

Two Salik gates debuted that year, and the Al Maktoum bridge gate was introduced in 2008.

The same year the ‘free’ time was introduced.

This, however, does not extend to other Salik gates.

Many residents claim they did not know of this free-run.

“I didn’t know that Maktoum bridge had a no-Salik time. Now, I won’t try to avoid it at night,” beamed S Kumar, a regular on Dubai roads.

Two new Salik gates were launched earlier this year bringing the total number of gates to six.

The gates are Al Garhoud, Al Barsha, Al Maktoum Bridge, Al Safa, Al Mamzar and Airport Tunnel.

In July this year, RTA scrapped the Dh24 daily Salik cap that had been in play since its launch in 2007.

This means motorists will be charged Dh4 each time they passed a Salik gate.
