Salik tag is mandatory for all vehicles - even 'export' vehicles with the blue number plate, according to a Roads and Transport Authority Dubai (RTA) official.

RTA said vehicles with blue number plates are also obliged to pay Salik fee and added that such vehicles are allowed on the roads for only 14 days from day of acquiring the export plate.

Maitha bin Udai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA, confirmed that all types of vehicles passing through Salik gates ought to have the Salik tag.

She said vehicles with temporary blue number plates can use the free alternative roads during the 14 days-grace period, if they do not want to pay Salik.

Grace period explained

Bin Udai explained that motorists who have Salik card but without credit in their account, will be given five days grace to top up. After this, they would be fined. "From the sixth day, a fine of Dh50 will be levied per day, she said.

For motorists who do not have a Salik tag at all, they are given 10 days without fine to obtain one. From the 11th day, a fine of Dh100 will be levied on vehicles that do not have a Salik tag.

The fine will be increased to Dh200 on the 12th day and thereafter Dh400 per day.

Bin Udai urged drivers to comply with the requirements of Salik system and ensure there is credit on their cards.

She also urged motorists not to use the same tag on different vehicles. She stressed that motorists must have Salik tag for each car they possess.

Similarly, she reminded drivers not to use Salik tags of former owners of the car in the event a person buys a second-hand vehicle. The new owner ought to buy a new Salik tag and register it in his name and update the vehicle’s details and change the telephone numbers.

Salik was first launched in July 2007.
