Sandy’s New York fury: Emirates, Etihad cancel flights... yet again

Frustration is mounting amongst stranded passengers as Etihad and Emirates were forced to cancel flights on its third consecutive day as tropical storm Sandy leaves devastation and debris behind in New York.

Emirates issued a statement on its website citing “severe weather conditions in the eastern part of the United States and the closure of JFK airport” as the reason for the cancellation. Four flights in total have been scrapped for October 31, with passengers holding tickets to/from New York advised to contact their local Emirates office.

Etihad, earlier this morning delayed its flight to New York and later scrapped it altogether.

The Dubai-based Emirates is waiving the rebooking, re-issue and cancellation charges for passengers ticketed to travel during 29-31 October, inclusive, provided the rebooking is made onto an available flight to the same destination for travel within a seven-day period after the scheduled departure time of the original flight and in the same booking class.

Aside from NYC, rebooking/re-routing is also permitted onto an available flight to/from IAD (Washington Dulles International Airport), IAH (George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston) or DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport).

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways has resumed flights into New York, with its flight status for October 31 indicating the flight is on time to depart.

Airline tracking website, Flightaware.com stated that major NYC airports remain closed with no estimated re-open time.

Flight cancellations will likely continue Wednesday, with over 18,100 flight cancellations so far as a result of Sandy.
