More than 700,000 Saudis visited Dubai and pumped nearly Dh17 billion into the emirate’s economy in the first half of 2013 to emerge as the top tourism spenders in the city, according to official statistics.

Indians were the second largest number of tourists to come to Dubai, which has emerged as one of the most attractive tourism destinations in the Middle East.

During the first half of 2013, around 710,000 Saudis visited Dubai, where they spent an estimated $4.6 billion (Dh17bn), the Dubai Tourism and Marketing Department said in a report published in the Arabic language daily Alkhaleej.

“Saudi Arabia was the largest tourist exporter to Dubai this year and the number of Saudi tourists who came to the emirate  in the first half surged by nearly 31.6 per cent over the same period of last year,” the report said.

It said the figures meant that each Saudi tourist spent an average Dh24,000 in Dubai, the region’s trade and business hub.
