The Federal Traffic Council in its last meeting recommended that passengers in the rear seat also fasten their seat belts.

Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council and Assistant Commander-General of Dubai Police for Operations, said violators will face a fine of Dh400 and four black points.

Major-General Zafeen said the Ministry of Interior and Dubai Police are keen on implementing the law to ensure motorists' safety.

Major-General Zafeen said, the police considered the age of passengers as well as their height before making the recommendation.

He explained that in case of an accident, rear-seat passengers will be thrown to the front or to the side exposing them to danger.

He explained that short drivers and passengers must exercise caution while wearing belts because it should pass over their shoulders and not touch the neck in order to avoid “serious neck injuries in case the vehicle meets with an accident”.

Similarly, it is important for drivers to fasten their seat belts as they also are at the risk of hitting the window in front endangering themselves.

He said studies on accident reports prove that seat belts have prevented serious injuries and even death.
