Technology has given harassment a new dimension in crowded places such as shopping centres in the Emirates. Reports of people using mobile phones to take pictures of women or using bluetooth to send lewd messages across are increasing.

Captain Ali Ahmed Al Suwaidi, head of the commercial centres investigation section at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), was quoted as saying by 'Gulf Today' that the security patrols deployed at these centres try hard to curb such negative phenomenon, and have been found to follow up any complaint that has been reported by the public.

Even women have been found 'harassing' other women. However, mostly such complaints come from families at the malls and not from the victims themselves, he added.

In most cases, police confiscate the mobile phone and refer the accused to police station where legal procedures will take their course.
