Twelve more categories of employment can now apply for driving licences in the emirate, according to the Department of Traffic and Licensing, Sharjah Police. These include typists, painters, calligraphers, clerks, newspaper boys, sorekeepers, vendors, barbers and electricians.

Sharjah Traffic Police also plan to help traffic violators pay fines in instalments.

Lt Colonel Arif Mohammed Al Shamsi, Director, Traffic and Licensing Department, Sharjah Police, said: "We have undertaken a study to identify a suitable method for collection of traffic fines. This will help people who have accumulated huge sums. However, we plan to cancel the instalment option if the person fails to pay the premiums."

"The new system and mode of payment will be implemented once we get the formal approval," Al Shamsi was quoted by 'Al Ittihad' newspaper as saying.
