An average of 35 bounced cheque complaints are being registered every day in the emirate of Sharjah, according to a top police official who asked not to be named.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, the official said that the issuers of these cheques included both, individuals and companies.

“On average, we receive about 35 bounced-cheque complaints per day. We have noticed this increase in the number of cases since last year,” he said, adding, “These cheques are mainly issued to pay rents, loan installments, and for products bought. The nationalities of the issuers also vary, but Emiratis are a minority in such cases,” he added.

The official said the police in Sharjah were aiming to resolve the cases out of court if possible.

“First of all, we call the issuers to the police station and try to solve the case in a peaceful way and make the issuer pay the amount to the plaintiff. If for any reason we can’t reach the issuer, then we refer the case to the Public Prosecution, who take the case further.”

He also added that a large number of people who have issued dud cheques have already left the country.
