Target 2021: There will be no crime in Sharjah

Sharjah Police have launched a major campaign to reduce the growing crime rate in the emirate with an ambitious target to make it crime free by 2021.

The Sharjah Crime Prevention Programme includes setting up of more security cameras, running continuous awareness campaigns and controlling various sources of crime especially among children.

As part of a long term plan to reduce crime rate in Sharjah by ten per cent every year, Major-General Humaid Muhammed Hudaid, Head of Sharjah Police, said the overall crime rate in Sharjah has come down by 10.7 per cent last year and each year the crime rate will come down by 10 per cent, making Sharjah a crime free emirate by 2021.

The project aims to control crime before it happens and a mass campaign to spread awareness has already been launched.

Experts from the human rights department and the Criminal Investigation Department will form a special team to implement the Crime Prevention Programme campaign, which will also initiate a major awareness campaign through mass media –newspapers, television channels, radio stations and the social media, Major Humaid said in Sharjah. The campaign will also include cooperation with leading regional and international crime prevention bodies. The ideal plan is to control crime before it happens and any nefarious plans to cause trouble will be known in advance. Instead of taking action after a crime is committed, the plan is to know it in advance and stop the crime from taking place. In different phases, the entire emirate will be covered under surveillance cameras.

As part of the campaign, there will be more patrolling by the Criminal Investigation Department teams who will target various sections of society including crime against women and children.

Tourists visiting the emirate will also benefit from the Safe and Crime Free Sharjah campaign. In order to control crime of children and youth, parents will be made more aware about how to spend their spare time creatively and prevent children from indulging in crime.

Special awareness campaign will also cover cybercrimes. The Sharjah Charity Association, Education Department, Sharjah Cooperative Society, Free Zones, Shuruq and Al Hilal Petroleum will fund the crime prevention awareness campaign. The Sharjah University, American University of Sharjah, the Supreme Family Council, Sharjah Media Center, Social Affairs Department, Skyline University and the Municipalities Council will also be associated with the Crime Prevention Campaign of Sharjah Police. Special pamphlets containing the message of Sharjah Crime Prevention Programme will also be distributed throughout the emirate.
