Sharjah Educational Zone sacked an American teacher at a private school for showing an “obscene” film to school boys in class, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The zone took an immediate decision to end the teacher’s services after receiving a complaint on its 'hotline' from one of the students in the fourth primary class, the Dubai-based Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm' said.

The unnamed English language teacher insisted that he did not know the film violated local tradition and values and that he had obtained it from one of the students.

The teacher told the school’s administration that the film was also shown on a regional satellite TV channel which is broadcast in both Arabic and English, the paper said.

“One of the students in class objected to the film and made it clear to the teacher that it violated local values and norms, but the teacher expelled the student from class,” the report said.

The paper said the problem was later sorted through the school management, but that the expelled student decided to phone the education zone, which acted against the teacher.

The zone “banned the teacher from teaching in Sharjah again and warned the school for hiring that teacher without obtaining the necessary approval,” it added.
