Sharjah Police plan to reduce the speed limits on some highways and internal roads in the emirate.

This is to improve traffic safety and protect the lives of motorists, said a top official.

Colonel Shawaf Abdurahman, Director, Traffic and Patrol General Headquarters, Sharjah, said most of the fatal accidents have been caused due to speeding.

A study, however, has found that even if motorists follow the specified speed limits, they could end up in fatal accidents due to the high speed, he added. Lowering the speed limit is a solution to decreasing the number of fatal accidents.

Studies conducted by the traffic departments also revealed that reckless driving, failing to maintain lane discipline, not leaving enough space between vehicles,  entering roads without checking are other main reasons for fatal accidents.

Colonel Abdurahman said the police conduct awareness campaigns at regular intervals to educate residents and motorists of traffic safety rules, yet some do not respect the laws. He urged drivers to follow traffic rules and also called upon parents to educate children.
