Sharjah authorities are building fences across the emirate’s roads to force pedestrians to use underpasses and stop random crossing that had caused many deadly accidents.

The emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said it had already built nearly 7.8km of fences in the middle of key roads at a cost of Dh4.3 million.

The project has so far covered such busy roads as Al Nahda, Alittihad, Al Wahda, Khalifa bin Zayed, Industrial Rd 2 and Sharjah Gate square.

“This project is intended to improve road safety to save the lives of roadusers following a series of accidents caused by illegal crossings,” RTA said in a statement.

“We call on all pedestrians to use underpasses which have been constructed on some roads and legal pedestrian crossings on Khalifa bin Zayed Rd to ensure their safety.”
