Dh3.5 billion was set aside to compensate those affected by development projects in the emirate of Sharjah from 2007 to 2012, Salem Al Suwaidi, Director of Financial and Administrative Affairs and Public Relations at the Sharjah Directorate of Town Planning and Survey (DTPS).

During a meeting of the Sharjah Advisory Council, Al Suwaidi said the amount included compensation for demolition of old non-traditional buildings. Historic buildings were identified and turned into museums as part of the re-planning of 13 areas of downtown Sharjah, he added.

There are plans to develop the commercial and industrial zones of Al Dhaid. The old centre of Maliha will have a Friday market and a market for camels and livestock, he added.

Borders have been drawn and work is underway to restore the archeological area of Al Madam, he said.

In the eastern region of the emirate, an urban renewal project has been launched in Khor Fakkan. The limits of the heritage zone in Khalidiya has been increased and work is underway to revive the old market and the neighbourhood of the heritage buildings, he said.

Work is underway to develop the old market and restore the old fort in Dibba Al Hisn.

The Corniche area has been developed into a modern business zone.

In Kalba, the fort, commercial area, waterfront and the Corchine are being re-developed, Al Suwaidi added.
