Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road 'most dangerous' in Dubai

Twenty-four people died in 20 fatal road accidents on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in 2013, making it the most dangerous road for motorists in Dubai.

Twenty or 14 per cent of the total 142 fatal accidents in Dubai happened on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road which claimed 15 per cent of the total 160 lives lost in road accidents in Dubai last year. Of the 20 accidents, 11 happened at night and nine in day time.

Emirates Road came second with nine fatal accidents (or six per cent) out of the total of 142. The nine accidents, of while eight took place in day time, cost 13 lives or about eight per cent of the total of 160 deaths last year.

Sheikh Zayed Road was the third most dangerous road, with eight deadly accidents (5.6 per cent of the total) Five of the eight crashes took place during the day and three at night. Accidents on this road took 11 lives or six per cent of total number of accident deaths in Dubai last year.

Dubai-Al Ain Road came fourth with five (3.5 per cent of total) fatal accidents killing six people (3.8 per cent of the total). Two accidents took place in day time and three at night.

Al Wasl Street took fifth place with four fatal accidents (2.8 per cent of total) which cost four lives or 2.5 per cent of total mortality. Two accidents happened in day time and two at night.

Next came Hasah Street in sixth place which also took four lives.

Al Barsha 1 Street came in seventh place with two (or 1.4 per cent of the total) fatal road accidents.

Four lives (or 2.5 per cent of the total) were lost. One accident happened in the morning and one at night.

Tripoli Street ranked eighth with two deadly accidents (1.4 per cent of the total) and three deaths.

Al Yalais Street (from Jebel Ali to Emirates Road towards Dubai) came ninth with three fatal accidents (or 2 per cent of the total). Two of the mishaps took place during daytime and one at night. Three people (or 1.9 per cent of the total) died.

Al Khail Street, which saw three fatal accidents costing three lives, came 10th.

Gen. Mohammed Saif Al Zaffin Assistant General Manager of Dubai Police, said Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road and Al Khail Road were among the most dangerous roads for the second year running.

The list for 2013 does not show some roads which were on the list in earlier years, he added.
