For the second consecutive year, Sheikh Zayed Road headed Dubai’s top ten streets for traffic rule violations. 715,000 offences were recorded on this road last year, Emarat Al Youm newspaper reported.

According to statistics of Dubai Traffic Police, a total of 613,000 irregularities were noted on the other nine main Dubai streets put together.

Lt. Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazraoui, Acting Director General of the General Department of Dubai Traffic Police, attributed the increase in traffic violations on Sheikh Zayed Road to the 44 radars deployed on the sides of this road and the high density of its traffic. Another reason was the changing of the maximum speed allowed from 120kmph to 140kmph after the towers to Jebel Ali. Radars are placed not more than 3km from each other, he added.

Al Mazraoui said "all radars are visible giving drivers a chance to avoid speeding  but a large number of driver overspeed despite the presence of many radars on this road.”

He said the traffic police plans to activate cylindrical radars that can record several offences at the same time. Such radars can not only record speed violations but also non-use of seat belts and overtaking in a dangerous manner.

Al Mazraoui told Emarat Al Youm that the number of offences recorded on Sheikh Zayed Road by radar during the first quarter of this year came to 210,128, followed by Dubai-Al Ain Road with by 30,142. Dubai Bypass Road saw 29,000 violations and Al Khail Road 28,585.

"Emirates Road fell to fifth place at 27,781 violations followed by Nad Al Hamar at 19,090 and Dubai Financial Street 14, 827," he added .

"Ras Al Khor violations totalled  10, 872 violations and Al Aweer Road 10,533 violations and Baghdad Street came in the tenth position with 10, 358 violations," said Lt Al Mazraoui.

Al Mazraoui said Al Khail Road, which has 14 fixed radars, came second in last year with 113,068 irregularities. Emirates Road which has 22 fixed radars came third with 100,467 offences.

Dubai-Al Ain Road came fourth with 98,531 violations, followed by Dubai Bypass Road, which contains 36 radars at 89,043 irregularities and Nad Al Hamar in sixth place with 57,954 violations.
