The daughter of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has donated Dh200,000 to treat a 10-month-old Comoros girl suffering from eye cancer that could cause her blindness.

Sheikha Manal, wife of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, will pay all the expenses for the treatment of Afra at a specialized hospital in London, where doctors said treatment of such cases is available.

“We express our deep gratitude for Sheikha Manal for this generous gesture…this is not new to her because she is always a pioneer in benevolent actions,” the baby’s mother said, quoted by Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm.

The paper said Afra is suffering from a tumour in her left eye, adding that doctors at Twam Hospital in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain contacted a specialized hospital in London and were told treatment of such cases is available there.

It said her parents had appealed for help as they cannot afford treatment expense since her father works at Sharjah Police with a monthly salary of around Dh6,600.

“How can we pay Dh200,000 for an operation when our monthly income is Dh6,600,” the mother said. “We were hopeless until we were told about Sheikha Manal’s gesture…all the family is now happy and full of hope.”
