An Emirates 24|7 reader reported a serious accident in front of Thomsun Supermarket at Skycourts, on Tuesday night.

The eye-witness claimed that a small girl who came to the supermarket in Skycourts, tried to cross the road to go to a nearby hotel apartment ‘Abidos’ when she was knocked down by a car.

According to the eye-witness account she suffered a serious head injury.

Residents of the area are calling for a pedestrian crossing across the road in front of Skycourts towers E-F parking entrance, and

“I have seen that a number of Skycourt residents and children walking across the road and these measures are paramount to the safety of residents,” one resident told this website.

"People drive like crazy on this short stretch of road, overtaking cars at break-neck speeds. There are traffic signals and street lights, but these do not work," said R Singh, a resident.

"There have been several accidents on the internal roads around Skycourts and the police and RTA have closed some roads on the main crossing with barricades. This has only prompted motorists  to take disallowed U-turns and drive on the wrong side of the roads to get to their junctions. Thsi is quite common and a serious hazard," he added.

Residents have called on authorities to study the situation and take necessary measures to ensure safety of both pedestrians and motorists.

"Thomsun is the only supermarket in the area. A lot of people from surrounding buildings and The Villa community come to shop there. The population in the area could be well near 4,000. Skycourts itself has 2,800 apartments. Thomsun seems to be the hub of the area. Something needs to be done before a life is lost," said a resident.
