Some schools yet to give Ramadan timings

With just over two weeks before Ramadan starts, few private schools are yet to notify their parent community about the revised school timing.

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) had sent out a directive stating the timing, and eating arrangements that schools need to put in place during the holy month.

Many parents complain the delay means they are unable to plan ahead. “I read it in the media but my son’s school has still not sent any circular about it,” said a parent, whose child goes to Star International.

Some parents were concerned if their children’s school will close before Ramadan. “We don’t know what the school has planned. I wonder if the delay indicates that the school is closing early,” said an Indian parent, whose child goes to Delhi Private School in the Gardens.

Another parent claimed she had no idea that such a directive was sent out. “I should probably call the school and check,” said DP, whose child goes to Raffels World Academy.

When Emirates24|7 checked with the concerned schools, they confirmed the delay.

Star International stated that they were awaiting clarification from KHDA, and confirmed they would send out the guidelines soon.

Dinesh Kothari, managing director of DPS, stated his schools will close on June 25, and until then they would “follow the regulations set by the KHDA”.

Emirates24|7 had earlier reported on those Dubai schools which have already informed their parents of the changes.

KHDA guideline

“For this academic year, school hours during Ramadan will be from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, with shorter breaks. This is applicable to all grade levels and for all students,” the guideline read.

“It is important that fasting students are supported to continue with normal school life. In order to accommodate their needs, the school should ensure that they do not engage in demanding physical activities and that they are not exposed to heat to reduce the risk of dehydration.”
