The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the maximum speed limit on Umm Suqeim Street, starting from Dubai Police Academy on Sheikh Zayed Road up to Emirates road towards the Arabian Ranches will be reduced to 80km/h from June 1.

Meanwhile, the uniform speed limit on Umm Suqeim Road will replace the varying speed limits that ranged between 90, 80 and 60 km per hour in different stretches of the street, said Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Directorate of Dubai Traffic of Dubai Police.

He added the new measure comes within the framework of the comprehensive study to re-evaluate the speed on Dubai roads Dubai and the report has been prepared by the RTA in Dubai jointy with the Dubai Traffic.

Al Mazroui  disclosed that the objective behind unifying the speed on Umm Suqeim Road was to reduce the number of accidents which were taking place on the road as a result of unequal speed.

He pointed out that it is beginning to change the speed limit on a number of other streets, especially those which were witnessing an increase in the number of traffic accidents.

He also added that excessive speed is one of the major causes of accidents, therefore, the study recommended lowering the maximum speed limits to reduce the number of fatalities on Dubai streets to zero by the year 2020.

Meanwhile, colonel Al Mazroui also said it has fixed the maximum speed on the Boulevard street to 80 kilometers per hour. He also said that two radars have been installed on the Boulevard Street.

He revealed that one of the two radars was installed across the cinema and the other one near Reem Al Bawadi to ensure that speedsters slowed down in that area.
