Speeding in the UAE: Over 1.6m offences in 5 months

Drivers committed more than 1.6 million speeding offences on UAE roads during the first five months of 2013 and the figure included only speeding vehicles hunted by police cameras, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The 1.67 million offences were nearly 24 per cent below the 2.4 million speeding violations recorded by the police cameras in the first five months of 2012.

Police said the decline was a result of the installation of more speed cameras through the UAE, intensified traffic police patrols on roads and greater awareness by drivers.

“Another factor is that the Ministry of Interior is stepping up campaigns to educate motorists on the dangers of speeding on roads,” said Brigadier Gaith Al Zaabi, Director General of the traffic coordination division at the Ministry.

Quoted by the Dubai-based daily Al Bayan, he said police records showed young drivers are the main offenders on roads.

“We again appeal to this group to try and abide by traffic rules and avert reckless driving to preserve their lives and the lives of the other road users,” he said.
