A Jordanian woman who was found guilty of torturing her four-year-old step-daughter to death lost her appeal against the punishment awarded to her by the lower court.

The Dubai Appeals court upheld the verdict of the Court of First Instance, which sentenced her to 10 years in jail, followed by deportation, reported 'Emarat Al Youm'.

The Appeals court said it was clear from the Public Prosecution memorandum that the woman assaulted the girl – her husband’s child from his first marriage.

The Prosecution said, the child suffered from bleeding in the abdomen and head, which led to her death though the woman had not intended to kill her. And thus, requested the court to punish her under Article 336, Paragraph 1 of the Federal Penal Code, which stipulates the penalty of imprisonment of not more than 10 years.

Meanwhile, two housemaids testified against the woman. One of them said that the accused had taken the child to the washroom and she had heard the child scream. “I believe she was being beaten,” she told the court.

Another housemaid testified that the accused hated the child and was jealous of the little girl because her husband loved his daughter and also because the girl looked like her mother.

She told the court that the accused would mistreat the deceased girl and her two younger brothers. For instance, she would place their food on the floor and ask them to eat. Only in the presence of their father she served them food on the table.

Similarly, she would force the child to eat large amount of food quickly that she would vomit and then she would be forced to eat again. If she refused the girl was beaten, the housemaid told the court.
