Taxi fares start at Dh10 in Sharjah

Transport authority says fare hike due to rise in fuel bills of taxi companies

Taxi rides in Sharjah have just got dearer with minimum charges now set at Dh10.

This comes a month after Sharjah Transport Corporation (STC) revised meter fares to Dh1 for every 620 metres instead of 650 metres, reported The Gulf Today.

Until February this year the meter fare was Dh1 for every 800 metres.

The newspaper quoted Abdullah Al Zarri, Director General of STC as saying taxi franchises sought a hike to meet rising fuel bills.

Although the minimum fare was raised to Dh10 from Wednesday, the upward revision was due to be implemented from Friday.

According to the daily, the fare hike is likely to increase the demand for public transport buses.

Can the employers raise our salary to meet your expected rise in transport fares, 'cause it will be a burden for us due to rising fuel bills. Indirect tax paid by us.

Please start public transport buses before increasing taxi fare.
