These selfies can kill you: Sharjah Police

Sharjah Police has called upon young motorists to refrain from taking selfies while driving, as the practise could prove fatal.

Of late, majority of accidents reported have been a result of drivers taking selfies using their smartphones while at the wheels, according to a senior police official.

Major Abdulrahman Khater, Director of Awareness and Traffic Media, Sharjah Police, said despite awareness campaigns by police it is shocking to see an increasing number of road accidents claiming the lives of motorists who were busy taking selfies while driving instead of abiding by traffic rules.

“In the first seven months of this year, between January 1 and July 7, 8,154 violations were recorded  of motorists who used their phones while driving, an increase of 903 violations compared to that of last year,” he said.

The issue was discussed under the title: ‘Taking a selfie can end your life… the selfie is a danger that you have to stop practising’.

Yet another disturbing practice by motorists is that of clicking pictures of traffic accidents and even of injured victims while driving, said Maj Khater.

A fine of Dh200 plus four black points is levied to those caught driving vehicles while using their mobiles without headphones, according to Subject Number 135 in the Traffic Law.

Maj Khater called upon parents to play a positive role in educating their children about the fatal consequences of taking selfies.
