Sharjah Police have arrested an Afghan man who stormed into an apartment earlier this year and viciously attacked a girl and her mother before fleeing.
The masked man had thought the family in Al Darari area had gone out that night, but he was surprised when a nine-year-old girl opened the door upon hearing a noise outside, thinking her father had returned home.
When the girl screamed, he hit her on the head with a hammer and proceeded to carry out his plan to steal jewellery.
Police said the mother saw the burglar and started screaming, prompting the thief to hit her on the head before escaping, without stealing anything.
The woman gave a full description of the thief from her hospital bed and identified the man from the photographs presented to her from the police file.
The police officials carried out a man hunt and arrested the culprit.
The woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, two weeks after the attack. The little girl survived the attack and is slowly recovering from her injuries.
