Want to put your eating skills to test? Then join the unique Dosa Eating Competition being organised at a restaurant in Karama specialised in diverse dosa dishes.

A staple dish widely popular in southern Indian states as well as countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore, dosa is a fermented crepe or pancake made from rice batter.

The dosa eating competition may be nothing more than marketing gimmick by a restaurant to gain popularity, but it is sure to stir the interest of Dubai residents belonging to southern India.

The competition is set to run this evening at the Karama outlet of Dosa Plaza, the restaurant hosting the competition. The restaurant is part of a chain started by a cook-turned-entrepreneur Prem Ganapathy in 1990 as a small outlet in Mumbai, which spread throughout India and foreign markets like New Zealand and three locations in the Middle East, viz. Dubai and Sharjah in the UAE and Muscat in Oman.

The campaign to select the best dosa devourers in town is going on through a Dubai-based radio station.

“We believe this is the first time such a competition is happening in Dubai. The We are shortlisting the potential champions who are getting enrolled for the competition through SMS to our radio station. Only 25 best eaters will appear for the real event between 4 pm to 7 pm on Thursday,” said Jaya Lekshmi, Head of Programme, Super FM94.7, which is facilitating the event on air and on the ground.

The on-air promotion has been ongoing. “In the final round for five eaters who emerge victorious, each one will be given the longest dosa from Dosa Plaza, which is one meter long. The one who finishes first will emerge winner and get a cash prize.”
